The publication of research results in peer-reviewed publications is a very important indicator of the work of the research team. The use of quantitative scientometric indicators to evaluate the research activities of institutions has been widespread (primarily in the natural sciences) phenomenon for a long time.
The Dzerkalo Tyzhnia conducted research on the publishing activity of Ukrainian institutions using the Scopus database. The search was conducted in February 2019 (the database is updated every day), all types of documents for 2013–2017 were taken into account. Previously there were established the identifiers of Ukrainian institutions for which Scopus profile has been created. In general, 350 identifiers in Scopus have been checked for their relevance and have been determined their departmental subordination.
The results show that the staff of the institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine produces the largest number of scientific publications. Since 2013, during a year employees of the MES institutions have been publishing more articles than NASU employees.
Among the higher education and research institutions subordinated to the MES, the following higher education institutions have the highest number of publications in 2013–2017:
- Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (4949);
- V. Karazin National University of Kharkiv (2469);
- National Technical University of Ukraine «Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute»;
- Lviv Polytechnic National University (2184);
- Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1648).
In addition to the number of publications, it is interesting to know how they were quoted by their colleagues, whether the works were relevant to the scientific community and whether they influenced the development of further research. Since the traditions of scientific citation in different scientific disciplines differ significantly, the authors of the research used the number of 10% most cited papers and Field-Weighted Citation Impact.
As a result, it turned out that the most highly cited papers were written by the staff of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (584), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (276), Lviv Polytechnic National University (83) and V. Karazin National University of Kharkiv (83).
