Cultural cooperation with Jagiellonian University: exhibition of posters about Marian Smoluchowski was opened at Polytechnic

The traveling exhibition of posters devoted to life and work of the famous Polish physicist Marian Smoluchowski (1872–1917), whose contribution to science is equivalent to Newton’s, has now stopped at Lviv Polytechnic.

The exhibition Under the Guiding Star of Science: Marian Smoluchowski – Brilliant Physicist and Eminent Person was organized as part of an international project to promote life and work of Polish physicist in the research centers of Ukraine. The initiators are the Collegium Maius Jagiellonian Museum, the Library of the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Informatics of the Jagiellonian University, Scientific and Technical Library of Lviv Polytechnic and the Central Scientific Library of V. Karazin Kharkiv National University. It was the last one that, with the assistance of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Kharkiv, made it possible to display the posters in Ukraine. The opening of the exhibition took place on November 13 in the lobby in front of the Assembly Hall in the main building of the University.

In his welcome speech, the first Vice-Rector Volodymyr Pavlysh focused on the importance of Marian Smoluchowski scientific work, and Vice-Rector Oleh Matviikiv called the exhibition «a good example of cooperation between universities and our countries». A special guest of the opening was Rafal Wolski, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv.

– The opening of the exhibition devoted to the bright memory of the great Polish scientist Marian Smoluchowski here, in Lviv Polytechnic, is, in fact, a great and beautiful event for which I want to express my heartily gratitude. Your university is leading in cooperation with the scientific institutions of Poland, in particular with the Jagiellonian University, where Professor Smoluchowski worked until his death, said the guest.

Marian Smoluchowski was also a public activist, artist and alpinist. According to the worker of Scientific and Technical Library Pavlo Sokhan, he became the first Pole to conquer the alpine mountain Matterhorn (4,5 km) – one of the most challenging European peaks.

The exhibition was hold as a part of the XV Open Scientific Conference PSC-15 IMFS, organized by the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences of Polytechnic. The participants had an opportunity to learn about life and work of Mr. Smoluchowski in Lviv, as well as the current state of scientific research in the field of Physics of Colloids.
