On November 2, 2023, a friendly chess match was held between the student teams of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic National University. The event was dedicated to the memory of Mykhailo Romanyshyn, a famous Ukrainian chess player. The match was held in the Chess Club of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, located at 1 Fredra Street.
The tournament was opened by Oksana Shukatka, Acting Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. «With this event, we are reviving the idea of friendly matches between Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic National University. The last time such a chess match between students took place in 2004, so I express the gratitude to everyone who cares about the revival of a good tradition».
Oleh Romanyshyn, international grandmaster, chess legend of the Lviv region and Ukraine, attended the event. He told the participants of the event about the important role of chess in his life, recalled the first games with his father and the valuable lessons he received at a young age from his most important mentor.
Professor Roman Korzh, Vice-Rector for Education and Social Development, Lviv Polytechnic National University, expressed his gratitude to Volodymyr Melnyk, Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, for organizing the important event. «I propose to hold as many competitions as possible, not only for students, but also for employees and graduates of our universities», added Roman Korzh.
The chief judge of the friendly match was Ivan Ilnytskyi, who explained the organizational nuances of the tournament and emphasized the importance of holding events aimed at promoting the game of chess, restoring traditions and improving the skills of chess players.
The team of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv included students from the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Technologies, the Faculty of International Relations, the Faculty of History, and the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics.
Lviv Polytechnic National University was represented by:
- Danyil Mosesov, the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences;
- Marta Khabak, Maksym Shala, Dmytro Shevchuk, Ihor Fedak, Maria Vitkovska, the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies;
- Marian Kyrychenko, the Institute of Computer Technologies, Automation and Metrology.
According to the results of intense matches, the team of Lviv Polytechnic National University won with a score of 7.5: 4.5.
